A REFRESHER ON THE ICONIC AHS CHARACTERS RETURNING FOR S 13

American Horror Story: 13 premieres September 24 on FX and Hulu, and this season is bringing back an absolutely stacked lineup of franchise favorites. It’s 13 half-hour episodes total, with three episodes dropping each in premiere week and week two, then two episodes every Thursday until the finale on October 29.

Everyone assumed this was shaping up to be a full Coven reunion, but Ryan Murphy has been clear that’s not what this is. “Everybody thinks it’s a Coven season and it’s not. It’s all the seasons,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. I have to admit I’m a little disappointed to hear that because I wanted a fully coven season but I’ll take what I can get I guess. So anyways instead of one world, we’re getting characters pulled from across the entire franchise, all colliding together.

The biggest headline is Jessica Lange coming back at all. She’d said for years she was done with the show after leaving in 2015, but Murphy convinced her to return by offering to bring back all four of her most iconic characters in a single season, an offer too good for her to resist. She even teased a mystery fifth character she’s keeping under wraps.

So if you need a refresher on who’s actually walking back through that door, here are my 10 favorite characters (ranked) that have been confirmed to return and who they were:

10. Leslie Grossman

Is back as Coco St. Pierre Vanderbilt, the vapid, self-obsessed socialite turned reluctant witch from Apocalypse. Love her.

9. Gabourey Sidibe

Reprises Queenie, the human voodoo doll witch who’s popped up across Coven, Freak Show, Hotel, and Apocalypse.

8. Kathy Bates

Is back as Madame Delphine LaLaurie, the real-life historical torturer resurrected as an immortal, deeply racist relic of old New Orleans in Coven, the role that won Bates her Emmy.

7. Billie Lourd

Returns playing both of her past characters, Winter Anderson, the cult follower turned nanny from Cult, and Mallory Redmond, the young witch and eventual Supreme candidate from Apocalypse.

Returns as Elizabeth Short, the real-life Black Dahlia murder victim who first appeared as a ghost in Murder House.

5. Emma Roberts

Returns as Madison Montgomery, the bratty, powerful, and endlessly quotable young witch from Coven and Apocalypse.

4. Sarah Paulson

Is back as Cordelia Goode, the once-timid, now-powerful Supreme who took over leadership of the coven in Coven and Apocalypse.

3. Evan Peters

Returns as James Patrick March, the sadistic serial killer haunting the halls of the Hotel Cortez in Hotel.

2. Jessica Lange

Returns as Constance Langdon, the venomous, gossiping neighbor from the original Murder House season. She’s also bringing back her other three signature roles, Fiona Goode, the ruthless Supreme from Coven, Sister Jude Martin, the unhinged nun running the asylum in Asylum, and Elsa Mars, the German cabaret performer turned reality star from Hotel.

1. Angela Bassett

Reprises Marie Laveau, the immortal voodoo queen of New Orleans who’s been at war with the witches since Coven.

That’s a lot of history walking back into one season. Aside from Coven, which was a perfect season, each season of AHS can be hit or miss, but I can’t wait to see how Ryan Murphy actually pulls off putting all of these worlds in the same room together.
