If your watchlist has felt a little male-heavy lately, November has a fix. The theatrical calendar is full of films with women at the heart of the story, from a grief drama to a gothic thriller to a Disney witch adventure. Here’s what I think is worth seeing, in order of release date.
1. Mouse (Nov 6)
A film about Minnie, a teenager who loses her best friend Callie in a car accident and finds comfort in Callie’s grieving mother, Helen. After seeing Sophie Okonedo in Clarissa and now this, both such strong choices for her, I have a feeling this will be her Oscar year.
2. Orfeo (Nov 13)
A film about a pianist who chases a mysterious woman who vanishes into a supernatural realm, using music and memory to find her. Limited release in the US and Canada. Based on the trailer, it’s a realm I visually want to be in. Take me there.
3. Victorian Psycho (Nov 13)
A film set in 1858 about governess Winifred Notty, who arrives at an isolated manor while the staff start disappearing. I saw this at the festivals and it was actually good because, unlike Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story, Ryan Murphy was nowhere near it.
4. Josephine (Nov 20)
A film about an eight-year-old named Josephine who witnesses an attack in a San Francisco park. Her parents disagree on how to help her heal. The film stays at Josephine’s eye level, and I really like the idea of seeing it from her point of view. Sounds like an interesting watch.
5. All of a Sudden (Nov 25)
A film about Marie-Lou, who runs a nursing home near Paris and forms a bond with Mari, a theater director facing terminal cancer. The two leads shared Best Actress at Cannes. I’m biased when it comes to international movies, especially with strong actors, so I don’t need much convincing on this one.
6. Hexed (Nov 25)
Disney’s animated film follows Billie, an expelled teen who discovers magic and enters a realm of witches with her mother, Alice. I’m taking my daughter to see this one. Fun fact: I have an 8-year-old who’s as obsessed with movies as I am. HA!
Also coming Dec 11: Clarissa and The Debut. Dates can shift, so check with your local theater before you go.
That’s my November lineup. Whether you’re spending your weekend in a theater or saving these for streaming, I hope you find something new to love. Seen any of these early, or have a title I missed? Tell me in the comments, and keep an eye out for more women-centered picks in December.
